South Sudan arrests MPs, journalists over protests - Daily Nation

South Sudan has arrested three MPs and six workers of the national radio and television for their alleged role in protests that resulted in death of at least 10 people last December.

The demonstrations, which erupted in Western Bhar al Ghazal (WBG) State, were against a government decision to transfer Wau County headquarters from the state capital.

The MPs, including the deputy Speaker of the state parliament Edward Ukujure are suspected to have manipulated civilians to defy government orders about the transfer.

The WBG governor, Rizik Zecharia, said the arrests were recommended by a committee investigating circumstances behind the protests.

“It is not a matter of MP or constitutional post holders or this and that. These are acts against the state and nobody is above the law,” Mr Rizik told a local radio station.

“Whatever the title you are holding, as long as you violated the constitution and acted irresponsibly then you should be held responsible for that,” Rizik said.

After Rizik announced the transfer of Wau County headquarters to Baggari, a few miles away, there were protests that left 10 dead.
