JUBA, South Sudan – The U.N. mission in South Sudan says it is sheltering hundreds of civilians following an outbreak of violence.
Elia Kamilo Dimo, a government official in Western Bahr el Ghazal state, said Wednesday that security forces have clashed with armed youth the last two days. He said he was told two people had been killed but he could not confirm the deaths.
This is the second major clash in Wau in two weeks. Earlier this month, security forces fired into crowds, killing at least nine people.
Kouider Zerrouk, a spokesman for the U.N. mission, said several hundred people — mainly women and children — have sought shelter at the U.N. camp in Wau.
Dimo said the tribal violence stems from a government plan to move the Wau County headquarters.
