The latest segment of HBO’s four-part Witness series follows the French photojournalist Véronique de Viguerie in South Sudan, where thousands have been murdered, kidnapped, or displaced by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army. In the film, de Viguerie, who was pregnant at the time, embarks on two treks throughout the region, first with the Arrow Boys—a group of farmers who formed a militia to protect their community—and again with members of the Ugandan army, both of who were independently seeking out Kony and the L.R.A.
De Viguere first travelled to the region in May, 2011, with her colleague Manon QuerouiI. I asked her what prompted her to return as part of the Witness project. “I jumped on the opportunity to go back to carry on the story with better means and much more time,” she said. “I am drawn to people who come to that point in their lives where they say: I’m going to fight. Those are the people who fascinate me: people who say, I don’t want to be a victim anymore.”
“Witness: South Sudan” airs tonight at nine on HBO. Here’s a clip.
