The Government of South Sudan has dispatched a high-level delegation to represent President Salva Kiir Mayardit at a solemn international tribute honouring the late Nicholas Fink. The ceremony, attended by global leaders and diplomats, is taking place in New York alongside proceedings connected to the United Nations.
The delegation is led by Vice President for the Economic Cluster, Dr James Wani Igga, who is tasked with delivering President Kiir’s official message of condolence to the family of the deceased, as well as to members of the United Nations Security Council and the broader international community.
World leaders gathered at United Nations headquarters to pay tribute to Nicholas Fink, offering heartfelt condolences to his children and loved ones. Diplomats and public figures were visibly moved, describing him as a towering statesman, a visionary leader, and a dedicated champion of peace whose sudden passing has left the international community in shock.
Nicholas Fink served as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for South Sudan and Sudan, bringing decades of diplomatic experience to the role. Between 2012 and 2016, he also held the position of Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan, further cementing his legacy as a respected global diplomat.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as a true leader who devoted much of his life to promoting peace and justice. “His death is a profound loss to the world, particularly to the United Nations family,” the mission stated.
Fink’s distinguished career included a significant role in South Africa’s democratic transition, where he served as a constitutional advisor during the government of Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1999. A highly regarded legal expert, he contributed to governance reforms across multiple regions and remained steadfast in his commitment to equality, justice, and peaceful resolution of conflict.
Throughout his engagement with South Sudan, Nicholas Fink stood alongside its people during some of their most challenging times, earning widespread respect as a seasoned diplomat and unwavering advocate for peace.
