  • On 7 December, the Ministry of Health (MoH) in South Sudan confirmed an imported case of cholera in Renk Transit Centre, Upper Nile, following an active outbreak of cholera in Sudan reported by WHO.

  • As of 11 December, more than 436,000 people have crossed the border into South Sudan, with a daily average of 2,000 people. A possible cholera outbreak would put a strain on the Onward Transportation Assistance, which is very much needed to decongest Renk Transit Centre hosting currently about 27,000 people. With another 27,000 people displaced to Renk Town, the health system is overstretched and the risk of rapid transmission to other locations is high given the movement of returnees and refugees.

  • The MoH with support from WHO and partners has strengthened preparedness activities including surveillance for early detection and set up treatment centers in response to any alert in Renk County.

  • DG ECHO is funding WHO and partners (IMC, WV, NRC, GOAL, IFRC) for Strengthening Public Health Surveillance and Response systems in South Sudan.
