Egypt’s FM heads to Chad, South Sudan Monday for coordination on Sudanese crisis

Shoukry’s trip comes in the context of the coordination with neighbouring states on developments of the crisis in Sudan and its regional and international impacts, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Egypt is also liaising with neighbouring countries to coordinate efforts in order to solve the crisis and preserve the integrity of the Sudanese people and the stability of their nation, the statement added.

During his visits to N'Djamena and Juba, Shoukry will carry a message from Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Deby and South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, the ministry said, without further elaboration.

The Spokesperson of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zeid stressed the need to intensify coordination and consultation between Sudan’s neighbouring countries “as they are the most keen on the stability [of Sudan] and integrity of its people.”

“The ongoing Sudanese crisis casts a shadow over fragile and tense regional conditions,” the spokesman said, warning that the continuation of the crisis would have “dangerous repercussions on the stability of the entire region and on Sudan’s integrity and stability.”

Abu Zeid also highlighted “The significant humanitarian suffering that the Sudanese people are going through as a result of the continued fighting and military confrontations.”

Egypt, Sudan’s northern neighbour, has been pushing for a ceasefire^[1] to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The conflict has thus far killed hundreds of Sudanese people, injured thousands of others and caused tens of thousands to flee the country amid a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Egypt has also welcomed the start of initial talks^[2] between representatives of the two conflicting sides on Saturday^[3] – the first since the conflict occurred – in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah city.
