UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations has confirmed that at least 16 civilians in South Sudan have been killed and 34 injured in bombings by Sudanese aircraft.
U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, the current Security Council president, told reporters the U.N. peacekeeping mission in South Sudan reported that the casualties were from bombings in Unity State near the border with Sudan, and also caused significant damage to infrastructure.
She said council members demanded "an immediate halt to aerial bombardments by the Sudanese armed forces and urged an immediate cease-fire and return to the negotiating table."
Rice said the council welcomed the withdrawal of South Sudan's forces from the oil-rich border town of Heglig, which Sudan claims it controls.
