Police authorities in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, said they have arrested four suspects following Sunday’s clashes at the Mahad displaced peoples' camp in the Konyokonyo suburb.
The clashes which involved members of Murle and Anyuak communities were instigated by a group of Murle boys allegedly under the influence of alcohol, according to camp officials.
At least one man died and scores were injured in the clashes.
Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin, the police spokesperson, said four suspects are being investigated over the incident.
“As police, we dispatched to the scene on Sunday night. We tried to evacuate one critically injured man who succumbed to his wounds before reaching the hospital,” he said. “So now we are holding four people on suspicion of involvement in the killing.”
The police official said more investigations are still ongoing.
Charles Wello Onyony, an Anyuak lawmaker in the National Legislative Assembly, welcomed the arrest.
“We met police authorities yesterday and they assured us that the incident was being investigated. We could not follow up to get more details because we are busy at the funeral,” he said.
