President. Salva Kiir

In Summary
In March, the US government imposed sanctions on 15 South Sudanese oil operations, which it said were important sources of cash for the government to put President Kiir on pressure to end the war.

Kampala, South Sudan President Salva Kiir has said the United States government is becoming an obstacle to achieving peace in the world’s youngest nation.

This was in a statement issued by the president’s office last Wednesday in response to an earlier press release by the White House which said the South Sudan government had lost credibility.

President Kiir also blamed the opposition for making what the letter describes as (impractical demands) during the on-off negotiations mediated by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development [Igad].

“In the same vein, part of the blame also goes to the United States, which has actually been quite a real obstacle towards achieving a peaceful settlement in South Sudan,” the letter reads in part.

South Sudan says the US government has been “fixated” and biased against it besides hurling insults to South Sudanese.
“Instead of constructively engaging and fully supporting efforts of South Sudan’s Transitional Government of Unity to restore peace and stability, the US has simply been hurling condemnation after condemnation,” the letter reads.

The White House letter said: “The government of South Sudan has lost credibility and the US government is losing patience. The people of South Sudan deserve a government that is able and willing to lead the country to stable future,”

US played a big role in the independence of South Sudan but the relations between the two nations has become fragile following continued war in which Kiir’s regime is accused of committing human rights abuses during that war has displaced millions of people.
