South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police, Majak Akec Malou, on Friday hailed China for supporting the country’s national police college as the country hastens creation of a modern law enforcement agency.
“China is an important partner for us. We welcome their continued commitment in building our police to match the modern professional police that will fight crimes in the country,” said Malou.
Malou told Xinhua in Juba that the training would have not been made successful without Beijing’s generous financial and technical support to help upgrade the training modules.
He also acknowledged the technical know-how rendered by neighboring countries like Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia to help professionalize the police force in the world’s youngest republic.
The South Sudan Police was founded after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 within the government efforts to transform the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) fighters into a professional army and institutionalized police.
Since then, the international and regional actors have been attempting to implement a program of security reform in the country.
But South Sudan’s police have grappled with criticism during the ongoing conflict over human rights abuses.
South Sudan descended into violence in December 2013 after President Salva Kiir sacked his former deputy Riek Machar, leading to fighting between mostly Dinka ethnic soldiers loyal to Kiir and ethnic Nuer soldiers loyal to Machar.
The violence has killed tens of thousands leaving 4 million people living as refugees in neighboring countries. Enditem
