SINKING SPRING, PA —

Green Valley Elementary fifth-graders walked a mile around the school carrying a gallon of water Thursday to find out what many people in South Sudan do to obtain clean water for their families.

The students recently read "A Long Walk to Water," which highlights the need for clean water in South Sudan. Salva Dut, the man on which the book is based, started a charity called Water for South Sudan.

Inspired by the book, the fifth-graders have been raising money to build a well in South Sudan. They set a goal of $5,000 but raised it to $7,500, the cost of half of a well. As of Thursday, the students had raised $8,280.

More information about the charity is available on the website, www.waterforsouthsudan.org. Information about the students' fundraiser is available on Green Valley's donation web page, https://tinyurl.com/y7c3lkae.
