South Sudan is set to become Africa’s biggest refugee crisis since the Rwandan genocide in 1994, two UN bodies warned on Thursday, with one in three of the country’s population already displaced.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said this in a joint statement.
The number of refugees from South Sudan is expected to hit the three million mark by the end of the year, the UN agencies said.
“The human cost of the South Sudan conflict has reached epic proportions.
“If the war doesn’t stop, refugee numbers will rise from 2.5 to three million in 2018,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Uganda already hosts more than one million South Sudanese refugees, and they have also fled to neighbouring Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic.
South Sudan, the world’s newest country, is in its fifth year of war following a 2013 split between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar.
