Shoukry meets South Sudanese VP in New York

CAIRO, 23 September 2017: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had talks on Friday with South Sudan's First Vice-President Taban Deng on bilateral ties and ways to bring about security and stability in the African country.

Shoukry, during the meeting that was held on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, praised relations between the two countries, citing a successful visit paid by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir to Cairo in January.

Shoukry said Cairo looks forward to promoting ties with South Sudan, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

Shoukry pointed out to an Egyptian project to establish a 4MW solar power plant in Juba and two projects for fish farming in Juba and Wau, with a total cost of 10 million dollars.

He renewed Cairo's support for South Sudan, said the spokesman, adding that Deng expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian support.

During the meeting, Shoukry also asserted Egypt's interest in shoring up a peace agreement in South Sudan that was signed in August 2015, particularly in light of Egypt's membership in the AU Peace and Security Council.
