March 14, 2015 (RUMBEK) – Dozens of residents in South Sudan’s Lakes state have been affected by heavy rains that hit the region on Friday.

Elders in the region claimed it was the first time rainfall of such a magnitude had been witnessed in Rumbek, the Lakes state capital.

Moses Makur, an elder residing in Malual-akan area, said several birds and dogs died while many houses remained minus iron sheets.

Not even car windscreens were spared during the heavy downpour.

A security officer, who requested anonymity, said all cars damaged would be taken for repair.

“It rained only in airport residences, market and Malual-akan areas and most the affected was Nile Commercial Bank and market [structures] lost roofs,” he said.

Civilians whose private cars were destroyed also reported the matter to police.
