South Sudan is to stop using Uganda's telephone code in October, Parliament has heard.
"We have been informed by the Sudanese government that in October, there will be no need for them to use our +256 telephone code," the information and communication technology minister, Ham Mulira, said on Tuesday.
He was responding to questions raised by MPs during a debate on his ministry's budget for this financial year.
The MPs were concerned that Sudan was using Uganda's code for free.
Mulira explained that in 2006, South Sudan asked Uganda to use its code temporarily.
He added that uganda telecom connected South Sudan on the code.
"It is not accurate to say that the code is for free. The operators have interconnection charges," Mulira argued.
