SPLA official spokesperson: Villages of Okel in Kodok area and Alel of Lul attacked by SPLA on 09/07/2010

General Kuol Diem KuolMore than ten people have been killed in recent clashes between the forces of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and armed groups said to be allied to the breakaway Sudan People's Liberation Movement -- Democratic Change (SPLM-DC).

The SPLA official spokesperson, Major General Kuol Deim Kuol, said his forces on Friday attacked two locations of the armed group of the SPLM-DC in Upper Nile state. SPLM-DC is headed by the former Sudan's Foreign Minister, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin.

"Yesterday on Friday July 9, 2010, there were criminals belonging to SPLM-DC who established two bases of militias center in Western Bank of River [Nile]. Our force attacked their position resulting into killing of militias group as well as military equipment seized by our SPLA and both two centers were completely destroyed," Kuol said.

The villages comprised of Okel in Kodok area and Alel of Lul were areas established by the SPLM-DC militias and we have attack them and more military equipments including 6 AKM rifles, solar fan and generator were seized during an attack," explained the SPLA spokesman.

He said that 11 armed militia members were killed by the SPLA forces as well as three people from SPLA forces sustained injuries.

Kuol however added that the situation in the Western Bank of the river is back to normal as the army was pursuing the militias.

Kuol accused the northern dominant National Congress Party (NCP) of supporting the SPLM-DC militias operations in Southern Sudan to disturb peace in the region.

"Those militias disturbing South Sudan security are military wing of the SPLM-DC and their support came directly from Lam Akol in Khartoum. Lam himself gained support from Khartoum government and I need to ensure everyone that SPLA is not sleeping, we are protecting our civilians from any attacks," he said.

The militia's commander, Colonel Guang Robert was reported to have been wounded in his arm and "now he is on the run with his few left forces toward forest and our SPLA forces are pursuing him...and I have confidence that he will be brought to book without failure," he further explained.

SPLM-DC leaders in Khartoum could not be reached for comment by Sudan Tribune.

    General. Koul Deim;
    (We are protecting civilians)
How could you protect civilians the same time you are burning their villages? and what could you say about those civlians now, they dont have any residnets to sleep, they are hiding and living under the trees, who is taking care of them??

  • Joseph Okony

    Koul Diem,
Is it really you mean protection of the civilian or destruction of the civilian? Your forces have committed atrocities in these areas including raping, looting the properties of civilians and burning down their villages.
I think you are from Southern Sudan where culturally the men prefer to be killed than raping the women and daughters.
My best understand is that those forces are a national forces for the Southern Sudan as a regular forces whereby they should be governed by rules and regulations, please correct me if I, am wrong. Totally what you have done is contrary to your mandate as a national army for the Southern Sudan.

Dear General Deim, I am now confident why our beloved SPLA is becoming an agent of terror and distruction. I have now understood!!! This is because the very Commanders that are suppose to curbed them are the one directly and indircetly encouraging them to do atrocities.. I am in Malakal, and yesterday was observing the displaced in Dar Elsalaam school, about 400 people (women and children). According to them, their villages were burned to ashes including Owikiel of late Collo Reth Ayang. God mercey, Where is Colonel Guang and his Militia here???. and if you know they are in the Bushes why burning villages and raping civilians. And do militia that are on run keep refrigerators realy??? Shame on you and on your style of command. It will only be God that will revenge for these poor people....Amen..

Dear brothers, don't bother yourself to be concerned with what the so-called the SPLA official spokesperson has been saying against Shilluk, he is one of those are planning to destroy our people in the south in their clandestine meetings. His thinking about Shilluk like the Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadingad who said "Irael Must Be Wiped off the Map"

I am Sure General Deim and the likes are dreaming of wiping off the Shilluk from the South, even from the earth if possible as long as they are in the power. we know their evil tactics. But they must know that they are not God. so, brothers don't waste your time in replying to his triballist statement. It is only a matter of five months and everything will change and we will see where he is going to hide.
