The GOSS is caught by time and will be facing a lot of pertinent questions from the public as the count down on referendum had taken serious step by parliamentary endorsement of the referendum commission yesterday(28/6/2010).
In actual fact, the referendum is not the responsibility of GOSS alone, nor is it GONU alone, not even the south alone or north alone for that matter. One young southern university student was asked how he would vote in the coming referendum? He promptly answered that he will vote for separation. Then he was asked about how his education would be continued in the south. Without any thought, the young man answered promptly again that he will continue in his university. If any thing, the young man in the university had no idea about the implication of voting for independence. The pertinent question is, how many southern people know about either options of self-determination in the country side if the university’s students knowledge is as shallow as this.
What we need during this remaining period is how to impart the knowledge to the citizens of the south the meaning of self-determination so as to decide on their own why they would vote for either option. The GOSS on the other end must be ready for all scenarios, especially incase of vote going for independence. It is hoped that the independence would be friendly so that the southerners in the north and northerners in the south remain brothers. It must be known from now how many university students from the south are studying in the north and their colleges. It must also be known before hand whether these students will be accommodated immediately in the southern universities or will remain in the north until they finish their education. This issue must be handled together with the debts.
The most crucial issue is whether the vote in the referendum will be free and fair unlike the elections which were rigged with impunity by SPLM in April 2010. If the NCP and SPLM conspire against the people and brings separation or unity by crocket ways, there will neither be tranquility nor peace in the south. The rejection would be more intense than the rejected elections which send Athor rebelling. If the forgery goes in favor of unity, the result is going to be same. Given the circumstantial evidence that Sudan was united since independence in 1956, but there was always war. But people are used to live in war in south.
