I wish your decision would have been from the president of south Sudan to ban alcohol intake in whole southern states, because the effect of these behaviors is obvious in the lives of leaders. Many of us forget that we are still in the state of war and enemy can used this weaken as mean to overtake us by surprise.
When the first civil war ended in 1972 many intellectuals from different three provinces of south gone to Juba and they forgot their families in their respective provinces, until second war break out 1983. Now, the sad thing is that the history seemed to repeat itself. Most sorrowfully enough the first factory established in south Sudan in Juba capital after the war is beer factory which can only sustained the need of drunkard and not the whole southern population which is populated by children that need food, clean water , medical attention. In other words, the government of south of Sudan seems to be saying that the Alcohol is more necessary than anything else for southern. Therefore, Telar decision of provisional order of prohibiting consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages in his state will provoke the government of the south Sudan that initiated beer factory in Juba.
For Telar decision will be interpreted wrongly as challenge against the interest of those leaders, who initiated the beer factory, and they will regard you as destroyer of their businesses, so you have to be ready to wage the war with your colleagues in the governmental offices who cannot work without wine intake, leave alone the sale of the beer.
Personally, I appreciated your courageous decision of banning alcohol consumption in your state. Indeed if we want to rescue the lives of beloved one for whom we fought liberation war, we need to take that sharp decision even if the world may not like it.
Now, some of your people begin accusing you that you are try to implement Sharia law, to me this is blind accusation because the people who are wearing out by wine are our own people in the south and not Muslims from the north. Such people will try to justify drinking alcohol by using the biblical verses wrongly, arguing that why did Jesus made wine in Cana wedding, or why did Paul advice his disciple Timothy to take little wine for his stomach. All these verses people used as loophole to qualify their drinking of alcohol.
More less, every person who rejected your salvation decision let him read what the Lord says about the alcohol in his words: ''Don't be heavy drinker ----you will end poor with only rags to wear'' (Prov.23:20-21), again the Bible stresses that the wine bring trouble, arguments, fights, cuts, bruises, biting people like poisonous snake (see prov. 23:29-35). More specifically statement Bible addresses to the leaders is that they should not get drunk or even want to drink, for drinking make you forget your responsibilities and you ill- treat the poor. Beer and wine are only for the dying or for those who lost hope. Let them drink and forget how poor and miserable they feel (see Prov.31:4-7).
For those who encourage drinking alcohol, do they want to qualify that the southern are hopeless and dying people, so that it is acceptable for them to drink in order they forget their poverty and miserable situation. Truly I want to dispute these mentalities which encourage people committing crimes base on wrong freedom and wrong human rights assumption. Southern are more rich people in whole African nations but today they enslaved themselves with things that may not benefit them. The research said that the beer which was drunk in the south Sudan in one year, is consumed in Uganda in five years. This is true indication that we ruined ourselves and enrich Uganda five times a year.
Additional to what I mentioned alcohol made Noah holy man of God to forget himself and his private parts were exposed to his children, in the same line Lot under excessive drink had done shameful thing to his two daughters. These two incidents are terrible things normal person cannot commit.
I advice all southern to join hands with Telar Ring Deng in fighting this destructive enemy called Alcohol that claiming more lives after AIDS. Let the government encourage the sellers of beer and wine to look for alternative businesses that may not harm our peoples.
The nation cannot be built on wrong foundation of alcohol intake; this nation will not stand any outside pressures. The effects of wine or alcohol are more than it benefits on the human life such: it let you lost your reputation in society; it leads you to become financial bankrupted; it let you not to be good responsible person in your family; it destroyed your career; it makes you behave irrational; it exposed you to all kind of crimes such as car accident and raping women or girls without your conscience. Finally, it killed mutual love and friendship.
Leaders are responsible before the Lord for the task he entrusted them to take care of his people who are subject to them. If those people perish, then their blood will be on the leaders. Indeed, the courageous decision taken by Telar is line with the Bible teaching if we believe in that teaching?
