JUBA, WWW.GOSS.ORG – The Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement (SPLM) candidates who contested the elections in Collo (Shilluk) Kingdom areas in Upper Nile State have denounced the results and demanded that the elections be repeated.
Led by the caretaker minister for Regional Cooperation in the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), H.E. Oyay Deng Ajak, the candidates alleged that the elections in the Kingdom were grossly compromised and that they, as well as their party, were unfairly denied victory.
Addressing the press in Juba on May 4th, the candidates reported that all the SPLM candidates in the Collo Kingdom lost the elections to the SPLM-DC. However, they were quick to clarify that they did not lose fairly. They attributed the loss to a number of electoral irregularities including harassment of party agents; confiscation of ballot boxes in some areas; rejection of some votes from areas that supported the SPLM; creation of illegal polling centres and closure of the authentic ones; threats by armed militia in some areas; issuance of ballots to non-registered voters and allowing them to vote; abnormally high voter turnout in some areas; and partiality of local administrators.
The candidates also accused the National Election Commission (NEC) of being partial in the process. They alleged that the NEC seems to be working in collusion with a rival party and have unilaterally declared the results in the rival party’s favour without addressing the “genuine” issues raised by the SPLM candidates. They also accused the NEC of giving mixed signals by citing the case of Fashoda Constituency No. 20 whose results NEC had allegedly nullified only for the same results to be upheld by the electoral body afterwards.
The Collo candidates also decried alleged tribalism in the kingdom in which the residents are being urged not to vote for the SPLM on the flimsy grounds that it belongs to another community which is not interested in the wellbeing of the Kingdom. They urged all peace loving citizens of the Kingdom to ignore such mischief peddlers and instead work together with all the communities in Southern Sudan and beyond to bring lasting peace and prosperity to the region.
They vowed to use all legal means to seek redress for their complaints and swore that they will not accept the results until they are convinced that justice has been done to them and their community.
Besides H.E. Oyay, the other former contestants at the meeting were Maj Gen. Alfred Akuoch and Mr Peter Lai. Ms Abuk Nyaba and Mr Henry Omai, the SPLM winners of the region’s Women’s List and Party List respectively also attended the press conference.

Dear his Excellency, retired General Oyai Deng Ajack,
No one with a heart could deny your national role you play in SPLM/A records. You are even greater than Dr. John Garang. Your unforgettable accomplishments should always be remembered and appreciated by your party.
General Deng Ajack, I do comprehend and rationalize how it is unacceptable to you to know that you have lost the election in your mother land. This is being indicated by your call for re-election in Collo kingdom.
General Oyai, it seen to me like you are running into collision with your own community and this will be treated as a retaliatory act. But fight should not be between you and Collo people rather than you and your party. Your party has first betrayed you by removing you from your military post, a post that helped SPLA to force the enemy to sign the CPA. Deng, SPLM suppose to elevate you to be defense minister of South. Your party suppose to compensate you by providing services to your people. If your party offer you an opportunity to serve your people, that could have been your credit to win the election.
Ajack, losing election is not importance than your community losing you and you losing your community. I can tell your community needs you and you need them. Let it be like an example of a shepherd who left 99 sheep wandering in mountain and went to look for lost one sheep. To shepherd, number of sheep must be complete.
To me Mr. respectful general, we do not need to frighten or to intimidate or to retaliate rather than to enlighten ourselves and to contemplate on what have went wrong that brought this situation. If we understand reasons to this situation, we will react positively and rebuild our unity.
To my personal understanding, you should call for re-election in the whole south. In doing so, you are asserting yourself as fair, just and transparent man who look for the benefit of all rather than self-satisfaction.
Calm down, ground down yourself and come back to your true personality so that you might see clearly and think positively. You are not a corrupt leader and you know that very well as we do. There is a saying that a baby cannot be thrown with water. Many values in you are very human, but…………
