Press Statement : General George Athor Has Not Joined SPLM-DC

In a television broadcast on Southern Sudan TV today, a Spokesman of the SPLA stated that General George Athor has joined SPLM-DC. The claim came in relation to the bloody attack on Doleib Hill at dawn which the SPLA Spokesman blamed squarely on General George Athor.

We would like to inform the public that General George Athor has never joined the SPLM-DC at any time. Somebody of General George Athor's stature could not have joined SPLM-DC secretly. As stated by the SPLA Spokesman, he was until recently an SPLA Deputy Chief of Staff and had to resign to contest for the position of Governor of Jonglei State in the general elections just concluded. He contested as an Independent. So, when did he join SPLM-DC?

We would like to categorically and unequivocally reject such a claim which is an utter lie driven by sinister motives. It is meant to besmear the good name of SPLM-DC in an act that involves armed violence. The SPLA should deal with its own problems and must desist from looking for scapegoats. That will be the only way to gain respect as a professional and non-partisan army.

We are a registered political party and have undertaken to follow only peaceful means to achieve our objectives. We abhor violence and condemn those who initiate it.
