People in various parts of Eastern Equatoria and Jonglei States in Southern Sudan are facing severe acute food shortage partly due to poor rainfall and subsequently failed cropping season (Eastern Equatoria State) and due to displacement caused by tribal fighting (Jonglei State).
This has been confirmed by recent assessments and reports by UN.
In eastern Equatoria 20 % of the population (181.223 persons) are potentially at high risk. 4180 Households (22.574 people) are currently displaced in Twic East and Duk Counties in Jonglei State and are now living in Panyagor and nearby Payams. They need both food and shelter.
People are already facing hunger and malnutrition due to shortage of food. Children don’t go to school and sick and elderly people are particularly vulnerable. The displaced people are also suffering due to lack of shelter and other NFIs. Most likely people will start to move from the villages to the towns in search for food.
Various UN organizations and other International Organizations are responding to the situation, but the response is not sufficient to deal with the occurring emergency. ACT Juba Forum wants to respond to the situation together with local church partners in areas where no other organizations are able to assist. The response will be coordinated with UN/WFP and relevant State and County Authorities.
NCA, LWF and DCA are working with local church partners (CDOT, AIC, ECS, CDS) in the affected areas and the ACT Alert and writing of the ACT Appeal is coordinated through the ACT Juba Forum.
Eastern Equatoria State: Purchases, transport and distribution of food to approx 145.000 beneficiaries in Lafon, Kapoeta and Budi Counties.
Jonglei State: Purchase, transport and distribution of food and NFIs to apr 15.000 beneficiaries in Twic East and Duk Counties.
