Akobo County Press Release
The Geni victims mostly women and young children camped in the area for three weeks in search of food by forming fishing villages along Geni river, while being watched over by two dozens of police and army for protection. The attack was swift and over powered the few soldiers, and immediately started shooting at about hundred unarmed people by chasing them towards the river, chased the people into three directions; to Akobo, Pibor and Burmath Boma in Nyandit Payam to the east.
The news were received from the eleven fleeing wounded men and a woman who arrived Akobo town at around 10 Oclock and are currently being treated in Akobo hospital. The Akobo County Executive Director immediately dispatched two vehicles with police to search for survivors, and hundred and sixty one (161) confirmed dead (100 women and Children 50 men civilians and 11 SPLA officers) and are being buried by the river side as of 11 oclock this morning August 3, 2009. 29 wounded and 3 being SPLA soldiers. Dozens of children and women are still missing and most are believed to be either killed or abducted by the attackers. The authorities are still searching for survivors by beating drums and checking the river and the woods for more dead. More details are still emerging as these are just the preliminary reports.
The attackers are believed to be one of the groups of Murle tribes men who recently attacked Lony village north west of Akobo County on July 29th and killed a couple, abducted their child and ran away with some 100 head of cattle belonging to three families in the area. A similar group attacked Kwecar village to raid cattle but were unsuccessful. A larger group attacked Dengjok and Obere in June by killing two individuals and ran Away with a thousand head of cattle in Denjok Payam and killing Five and wounding two in Obere and ran away with un specified number of cattle.
The people of Akobo are trying to survive by all means; a boats convoy carrying about 800 mT of WFP food and camping material was attacked at Nasser County in Upper Nile on June 12th 2009, exacerbating the complex situation already created by a blockade of the only transport for trade from Upper Nile and Ethiopia since March, 2009 when a string of killings and counter attacks gripped the two communities resulting in about 100 dead on both sides and additional more than a hundred during the boat attack.
The UN continues to airlift food to Akobo, but proofed to be insufficient; the result was for the community members to fend for themselves looking for food in a very hostile environment.
-
There is no passable route leading to Akobo from any direction, therefore we urge the International community, the government of Southern Sudan to urgently do Something or/and pave road (s) to Akobo and for people of Sobat corridor to allow the trade boats and UN humanitarian Assistance without hindrance as the only viable solution to Akobo misery.
-
The protection of civilians has proven to be a difficult job due to lack security roads and well trained, equipped or sufficient police force for the county.
-
The ceasefire committee formed by Southern Sudan Peace Commission between Murle and Nuer failed to convince Murle Youth during the last three months and their recommendations for a conference in Pibor town casts some doubt amongst Nuer chiefs on genuineness of such an initiative.
-
The United Nations Mission in Sudan pulled out of Pibor and Akobo just a week ago falling short of making a meaningful impact on the reason of their presence in the first place. We urge more objectivity and purposefulness of such missions in the future.
-
There is an urgent need of disarming all Jonglei Communities and particularly the Murle before the next dry season in order to save lives.
-
Ask State Authorities/UNMIS for an urgent flight to Akobo to assess the situation and to provide more food to the people in Akobo County.

Death among tribes or tribal conflicts has less things to do with the government of Southern Sudan; governemnet is to protect civilians but not to kill them. tribals clash is to be blamed on the tribes who always put their hearts on other people's belongings. Talk to your people. Why are they always yearning something that is already belong to other persons - earned with his/her hard job, time and energy consuming. You think you want to take other person's belongings by force? c'mon! I, myself do blame my fellow Dinkans as well not only nuer, murle but other ethnics/tribes in Southern Sudan as whole; they must change first for the peace to settle soon among trible who are in conflict with themselves. Please do not blame the government of Southern Sudan; blame your people! Your tribe refused to be disarmed and they want to fight the GOSS, then it is up to you to protect. In the end government will take the full responsibility to disarm gunmen who are not soldiers or police officers! Any gang carrying gun or tribal men owning weapon and it is not for peaceful process, will be disarmed either forcefully or peacefull!

So far so good! Look I'm not trying to disagree. Dinka are still owning arms and that is so such a shame to my president of Southern Sudan who have failed to convince his tribal men which happen to be Dinka themselves. Look my friend, Mr Mkogan! We, Dinka have failed to advise ourselves... and I don't know who else will bring the people of Southern Sudan to the right track. You know how stupid it is that they have spreaded all SPLA army/soldiers into differnet location wrongfully ! They should've done it right! Look! The government of Southern Sudan has its all systems and laws written rightful but those systems and laws are run by wrong people who happen to be selfish and tribalism and at the same time they are power and wealth anger! I just find out three week ago that salva Kiir is not good to be a president, but as long as they have named him Mr. President, well let's call him that name; that can make him and his bodygaurds happy for now! We, Dinkas love weapons - which happen to be guns know a day. without them, I believe we, dinkas may not rule Southern Sudan because we rarely settle things by talking or through non-violence means. We barely negatiate, or settle things by talking. It is so bad and I really do regret to Shilluk, Murle, and other minority tribes in Southern Sudan whom dinkas have been abusing for years! I agree that if Dinkas are disarmed and all other tribes that are still owning arms are disarmed as well, there will be a good and sensible leadership among all tribes in Southern Sudan. I know Shilluk could own arms but they don't go and create the problem or they neither go to take other tribes' catlle by force. I believe shilluk have right to rule Southern Sudan though they are minor than Dinkas. As long as i can remember, we have had wise and well educated people in SPLA/M (they were Nuer, Shilluk, Dinkas, and more), but where are them now. We all know who has had the policy of jailing/prisoning, torturing and killing those people! There has been more than one man who has been playing the role of killing educated people in Southern Sudan. We thought we could have cut the snake's head off and now we are failing; so let's take the tail. unlease it is not harmful to us the people of southern Sudan. One man under one religion has been playing the stupid and deadly game ever been in Sudan as whole, and in SPLA/M, there has been almost one man under one tribe that has been playing almost the same game. But where is he know I wished he was alive so that he could see and sense by himself what a messes he has left behind! Belive me. One man is now in Kharoum guilty of crimes he has commtitted against Darfur, Southern Sudan and all. He is happy because he has killed more than just thousands but children, women, and educated people. He (Omar el Bashir in Khartoum government) doesnot care any more about his death because he has achieved the goal of being superior. Open you eyes my friend almost the system our Dinkas want to create in Southern Sudan! My freind, Mr. Mkogan! That is where dinka problems and tribalism started. Believe me! Other non-dinkas or dinkas who have lost there love ones in the name of SPLA/M wrongfully will tell you the same thing. Dinka problems has a root and it will talk time to find the solution for it! The clue for the solution is to say "no" to any stupid decision/mission that Dinkas is propossing! If all united against Dinkas' stupidities, we, Dinkas will become as good as gold! Just to remind you: The real problem that is present now a day is he absent of right people working for the people in the name of the government of Southern Sudan and its people. Message to all Dinka: My fellow Dinka! You are hurting people in South Sudan and around the globe! Be welling to accept disarmment so that there will be peace between you and other tribe! Stop your pride and think about tomorrow! Okay! for now you can blame the GoSS for failing to disarm Dinka/Jieng, but mostly blame Kharoum government for distributing arms among the civlians of southern Sudan as a source of violating the peace process! Check Me!

I dont think Mr. President can convince or advice his tribe men, because is a dinka/jieng plan ,to dominate everythings in the South by any mean, much has been said about that,90% of governmental functions running by the dinkas,it is not only a lion share but a elaphent share also ,this a greater mistake to assume that, that is why you are seeing, this stupidity of spreaded all SPLA soldiers in the shilluk land, nuer land murle land and all corners of Juba, this is an evildoes.we were fought for nothings, the path to independent is not an easy path, like what they think ,liberation is not looting public money ,there are piorities to be achive, like development, infastruction and so on.Liberation is means to be free from any types of domination,we fought Government of the north for that, not for looting public money, killing your citizens. But talking online will not bring chang to this Government ,but through domcratic chang.

Mr. Lal,I could not agree with you that, the government could not be blame for tribal conflicts, the conflicts in the south created by government of southern sudan, the government disarmed other tribes and leave other tribes with arm.The government is responsible for protection all citizens , the government protecting only one tribe now,so any tribe have a right to arm themselve with weapons, becuase government failed to protect them.It is not the time for us to talk about disarmament of tribes, otherwise ,we want to eradicate small tribes in the south.it is not the first time for disarmamant, the government disamed Nuer,Murle and shilluk ,and gave collected weapons to the dinkas,i think these disarmament is not right,it is giving right to one tribe to kill other tribe, this is not acceptable. For you information, before three days ,known number of SPLA soliders raided a village in kodok county ,killed four citizens,is SPLA not a government?.or SPLA is a tribe? so any person has a right to blame the government.
