The analysis is confined to the ten largest tribes as the census suggests. These tribes form more than three-quarters (76.7) of the population of Southern Sudan. In fact, two tribes, the Dinka and the Nuer, form more than 50% (56.1) of the population of Southern Sudan.
A number of assumptions have been made in regards to the population of Juba, Malakal and Wau towns. It has been assumed that the population of each of the three is comprised of two-thirds Bari, Chollo and Balanda, respectively. Northern Bahr El Ghazl is assumed to be entirely Dinka despite a sizeable presence of the Luo tribes there. This assumption is balanced out by not including the Marial-Bai Dinka in Western Bahr El Ghazal. Also, the presence of Moro tribe in Maridi town is not taken into account.
