Deng told reporters upon his arrival at Malakal Airport that his visit was aimed at making a general assessment of the university’s premises and other areas that were damaged during bloody clashes in February this year, with an aim of re-opening it.
The varsity head called upon the military to vacate the university’s accommodation facilities as it was infringing on the institution’s right, adding that he would consult with the Government of Southern Sudan and the Khartoum Government to look into the matter.
“I am also going to talk with the Government of Southern Sudan and the Khartoum Government on the need to re-open the university so as to facilitate the training of manpower for development of the state and South Sudan in general”, he said.
Deng’s tour of the university with Upper Malakal State Government officials was aimed at drawing strategies to renovate and re-open the institution immediately.
The acting President of the university, Deng Akol welcomed the move to renovate the institution of higher learning, adding that it was a significant contributor to development in the state.
Upper Nile University is one of Sudanese universities located in South Sudan, founded in 1994 to address fundamental issues of development of the states under the old Upper Nile Region.
