Statement on the Situation in the SPLM

April 22nd, 2009.

As you may have followed through the media, an impudent statement was issued by a certain Yien Matthew Chol on 16/3/2009 claiming that Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin and Mr. Ghazi Suleiman the advocate, have deviated from the position of the SPLM on the issues being debated these days - meaning the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to indict the President of the Republic.

The statement heaped insults on the two leaders and labeled other serious allegations against them. He went as far as to describe them as enemies to the SPLM (See the Arabic Daily Al Ray Al Aam dated 18/3/2009). Regarding the issue of the ICC which provoked the anger of the authors of the statement, we would like to reaffirm that we stand by every decision of the ICC which has nothing to do with justice but politically motivated, the end result of which is to create instability and anarchy in Sudan. This is why we are strongly opposed to it and will mobilize our people to stand firmly against it come what may. This is our position, let them state theirs.

Since the statement was broadcast and disseminated on public media (including the Government-owned Juba Television), we requested the leadership of the SPLM in a statement on 17/3/2009 to deny the statement if it did not represent its point of view. For there is no party worth the name that makes public organizational measures still underway, if there are any as came in the statement of this Yien Matthew Chol. The purpose of the statement therefore is a vilification of the two leaders and trial through the press in order to assassinate their characters.

The leadership of the SPLM did not deny the statement and it follows that it was sanctioned by them. Not only that, also, the group issued another invective on the 1st of April to the effect that we shall be expelled from the SPLM when the meeting of the Political Bureau is convened (see Ajras al-Hurriya Arabic daily dated 2/4/2009). These statements are a continuation pf the vilification and character assassination campaign which has been the habit of a small clique within the SPLM and that found it by a fluke in leadership positions bigger than their capabilities. For the last four years the Sudanese people have been following with concern over the pages of some yellow press their abuses and lies against historical leaders of the SPLM. These are published anonymously but we know them and their diabolical ways very well. This is a group suffering from inferiority complex and considers any knowledgeable and experienced person a threat to them and their ambitions that go beyond their humble capabilities. Some of their empty allegations were that Dr. Lam Akol was planning to transform a students' organization called the Modern Southern Front (MSF) into a party of his own, and that he wanted to change the Chairman of the SPLM on that position, that he was too close to the National Congress party (NCP), and that he was training militia in Wadakona etc. It boggles the mind how can somebody wanting to form a new party be working to be chairman of a party he is about to leave? But the naivety of these folk known no bounds. They did not ask themselves how a students' organization can be transformed into a political party when the practice has always been for an existing party to establish students' wing. On the militia, this is where they were totally disingenuous, for the militias are people on this earth. Nobody found any trace for them in the place mentioned or anywhere else. As to the closeness to the NCP, they did not ell us what was the minimum distance that must be kept with the NCP. This is more so because this misguided few meet on a daily basis figures from the NCP openly and secretly as the case may be.

Despite the obvious emptiness of these allegations they unfortunately found a listening ear from some leaders in the SPLM. This is how they got rid of everybody who they do not approve of in the executive and in the political organs. A case in point was the summary dismissal of Messrs. Telar Ring Deng and Aleu Ayieny Aleu who were dismissed from the SPLM in December 2007 in contravention of the procedures stipulated in the basic rules of the SPLM at that time. Also as it is now well known to all, the withdrawal of the SPLM from the Government of National Unity (GoNU) on the 11th October 2007, was not for the realization of the demands raised - for none of them was met when the SPLM rejoined GoNU in December - but only to remove Dr. Lam Akol from the cabinet. This matter would have been easily agreed upon by the Chairman and the person concerned rather than look for imaginary battles that cost our people and country invaluable time. Many had assumed that with the exit of Dr. Lam Akol from the cabinet and their entry into it, the group would stop the campaign targeted against him. Nothing could be further from the truth. They continued inventing lies and concocting information some of which is couched as security reports in order to mislead the Chairman of the SPLM.

It is crystal clear now that the group will never relent until they have expelled from the Movement all the members that they do not approve of. The farce of the National Convention is a case in point. They have excluded all capable members from any participation in the work of the SPLM even in the small committees at the time when each of them is a member in not less than ten committees!! Such a situation affected negatively the performance of the Movement as it is well known to anybody who dealt with it.

This targeting has gone beyond politics to attempts of physical elimination (the incident of 22/2/2008 which cost lives of three persons that accompanied Dr. Lam Akol on the Malakal-Anakdiar road) and preventing Dr. Lam Akol, by then a member of the Political Bureau, from holding public meetings in Kodok, Kaka and Wadakona in the first week of April last year. Dr. Lam Akol wrote a complaint on the matter dated 4/8/2008 which he handed over personally to the Chairman of the SPLM and President of the Government of Southern Sudan. No measures were taken on that up to the time of writing! Similarly, the same group targeted Hon. Manoah Aligo and worked to remove him without following the procedures from the leadership of the SPLM Parliamentary Caucus, and went further to block him from attending the National Convention on concocted security reports. One of the grudges the group holds against Hon. Aligo was that he advised in a meeting chaired by the Chairman of the SPLM in December 2007 against the dismissal of the two colleagues, Telar and Aleu. Now, we are please to hear that at long last they have been reinstated in the Movement, and such a step exonerates those who advised against that decision from the start. We endured their abuses and plots and lived with the non-effective participation in the Movement of which some of use is founding members; out of devotion to its unity especially that it is at the stage of political formation. We used to persuade many who were unhappy with this unusual state of affairs that these are symptoms of teething that will disappear soon with growth. But this misguided group mistook our patience for weakness prompting them to persist on their falsehoods and giving them audacity to change gear from insults to humiliation which they should know we cannot take lying down. We here tell them that they have crossed the Rubicon The group must be exposed for what it is. They are bent on dividing the SPLM. They are using the SPLM to fight ideological wars as evidenced by the chronic problems in the Northern Sector and the paranoia about the NCP. They are against the exercise of the right to self-determination by the people of Southern Sudan in 2011; this is why they sabotaged the Self-determination Bill prepared on the 1st of March 2008 by the Southern members of the National Assembly when Hon. Aligo was the Chairman of the SPLM Caucus; this is why they are constantly looking for confrontation rather than cooperation with the CPA partner, the NCP; this is why they are against any meaningful South-South dialogue, and this is why they are against any coming together of Southerners such as the last Kenana meeting. Under the influence of this misguided group, the SPLM now looks more an opposition party that a partner in Government. We remind them that the only program of the SPLM that we know is the implementation of the CPA, and the CPA is tied with specific timelines. Therefore, the South cannot afford to lose this opportunity for its historic choice simply to please others. After all the pubic insults and humiliation meted out against us, most of it's in a paper that belongs to the SPLM; we are now told that the Political Bureau has formed a committee to investigate us. We say that if there has to be an investigation, its purpose must be to serve the cause of justice by establishing facts impartially and fairly and not to be used to rubber stamp preconceived conclusions as was the case in similar pervious investigations. Hence, the membership and terms of reference of such a committee must be agreed upon by all concerned. After that, the authors of the statement issued on the 16th March and of that of the 1st of April 2009, have first to be investigated for the breach of party rules. The same applies to those who took it upon themselves to insult us for weeks in the official newspaper of the SPLM. There and then will members of the party believe that the committee is out for serious business and not for singling out some members for punishment while more serous violators of party rules enjoy impunity with arrogance. We would like to seize this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the unity of the SPLM, a party each of us has sacrificed in his own way to build and promote. Likewise, we cherish the unity of Southern Sudan and it people. Therefore, we shall continue to meet Southerners wherever and whenever we see fit. For that we do not need permission from anybody, least of all patronage from imposters. Last, but not least, we extend our deep thanks and gratitude to the masses of our Movement who condemned from the very beginning the childish move which came from this clique since Monday, 16th March 2009, and stood firm in support for the truth. Special thanks go to the following who expressed themselves in writing:

1. Political Activists of the Unity State.
2. Political Activists of Greater Fangak.
3. Citizens of Greater Equatoria in the National Capital.
4. Political Activists of Renk.
5. Political Activists of the Counties of Greater Fashoda.
6. Political Activists of the Northern Sector.
7. The Students and Youth in the National Capital
8. Independent Students in Universities and Higher Institutes of Learning.
9. The Nuer Community in America. Forward ever, backward never!

Just want to say thank you Sir. Carlo James Chol for making every single thing sound, dated, and count to the truth! We believe our viewers may take a chance to state their concern about this genuine info. On our side, we have no much to say but to say thank! Truth is all we have been waiting for, and now you have brought it to the point were our people, the people of Southern Sudan can understand why "we" or "us" at this point!

Since the silence of H.E. Salva Kiir means his approval of humiliation of the most intelligent cadres of the SPLM by political novices and dull opportunists, it is now the right time for these cadres to come out and take their rights with their own public might. Well done and congratulations to Hon. Dr. Lam Akol, Hon. Ghazi Suleiman and Hon. Manawa Aligo for taking the courage to challenge the serial vices and leadership crisis in the SPLM. The dignity and popularity of the historic SPLM/A should not be allowed to be thrown to the dogs by the current incompetent and corrupt Secretariat. The truth must be told before it is too late to rescue the SPLM from collapse in the face of Southerners. Long live the truth and down down to the concocted lies from SPLM Secretariat. It is time to start intense labour on leadership change for South Sudan for the betterment of the security and development situation. Salva Kiir must not be entertained any more as long as he is proving to be too deformed to be reformed by those who see ahead better.

Sheep is voiceless and defendless animal and that why Lord Jesus uses it as an example that He is the sheep's Shepherd. We all know Hyna can eat a sheep and sheep does not cry out for help or even resist to protect itself.
Collo leaders and people, we are being consider by Dinka people as cowrd and defendless people. The results are clear to all of us. Enough is enough. It is time to speak loudly against those evil Dinka people. Dinka people are bloodsucking. Leech can suck human blood senselessly. But if leech gets satisfies, it releases from human body and leave you a lot of your blood. Unlike our Dinka brothers who have been sucking our blood and we are now nearly to remain without blood in our bodies.
Tomorrow is not near to wait for more suffering. Now, now and now, we need any couragious Collo leaders deligitamte the SPLM/A.

    My great thank to brother Carlo, your stand worth mention. No body will attempt to question our great leader, we have finally understood the game against us; to weaken our position and unity of collo, but good news is;
it will never was or will it be there. It doesn't matter how is the challenge , nobody will ever achieve to weaker us.
Let them bet their drum in vain.

At long last the truth had emerged, lets be a remider for the short sited southerners who condemn the 1991 spilt. It appears that it was not a struggle for power, but seeking facts and truth for our people. The poor minded political mitgates have now seen that Dr.Lam and those supporting him are not a heap of power seekers, but the real people with the south at heart. We have been warning that the trend taken by salva and his clque will not deliver the south. The tribal government in Juba with its unspeakable corruption in all aspects(resources, political and even social). Juba is an example of a failed government, that can not pay the salaries, while boxes of dollars are being farried accross the border to Uganda.Salva can no longer deliver. I think is time to go home and become a farmer. The Guys in Juba are in hot soup and jumping from the fring pan into the fire. Now look they have difficulty in choosing who to stand for the president of the sudan, salva is hesitant because the result clear before the election. They want to lure Dr. Riak to stand agaist Omar, but Riak diplomatically played the dice back by saying the president of GOSS and chairman of the party must resign first. While those of Pagan are waiting like vultures to feast on the body of salva, start to politique for the southsudan election. Now every one wants to stand for the south sudan president(Pagan, Nyandeng,NhialDeng,Kuol Manyang Wani Igga etc. all from the same party.Look at the mess). The northen sector is worst, lame ducks like Yasir Arman who made SPLM very unpopular in the north for turning it into a commonist backyard has also responsibility for making salva failed by closing the office of the 1st V/P in the palace and concerns him self with non-beneficial affairs of Dinka in the south. Even that some of Dinka clans are still killing themselves in Bahar El Ghazal. It is time that the south revert to true thinkers and experience states'men and not the peoples' money stealers. For midgates like Yen Mathews who joined the movement ten minutes past twelve are becoming more cathlics than the Bishops its unfair. The south had already scrambled and it remains to be seen how you are going to rescue the situation. For the noisy barking small dogs like Yay Joseph and Deng Goj of the commonist mouth piece news paper "freedom bells" shall fall out soon, when Juba runs out of dollars. You have to bear heat of the fire you helped to fan into glowing- stay well.

Pagan pleading from Haiuge for postponment of elections should not be entertained. It is from the fear of failing the elections that hounts him, and wants to clink to the post as long as possible. forget, its time to go --- thanks for your poor perfomance as SG of SPLM.

Oh boy! It can’t get any better than this. What investigation are they yapping about here now, and for what??? You see? I fully agree with you that this misguided group of SPLM Political Bureau is indeed suffering from a serious inferiority complex beyond our imagination. Furthermore, I find their poor vision, inadequacy, and incompetence to be a laughable matter and it keeps getting funnier everyday.

Let’s see first if I understand this correctly ... The (so-called) SPLM Political Bureau has now formed a committee to investigate Dr. Lam Akol, Mr. Ghazi Suleiman, and others on matters that they have been already sentenced for by the same group? How on earth can someone in his/her rightful mind comes to think of investigating cases that he/she has already decided and published publicly? Wouldn’t you agree with me that it is imperative to have the investigation of any case(s), or any legal matter(s) carried out first before sentencing the accused(s) for any wrong doing? In fact, one doesn’t have to have any academics background in legal studies to understand that cases are investigated (first), brought to trial (if there is enough evidence), and sentences are handed down (in the end if necessary); and not the other way around.

This part of my message is for those of you out there who keep complaining to some of my relatives that I hate the Dinka people for no reasons, and unfairly keep attacking them verbally. Well ... if the governing system in south Sudan or the incompetent misguided group of SPLM Political Bureau we are talking about here today represents the Dinka people, then I am very sorry, and will no longer refer to them as savage beasts of the jungle, barbaric, retarded, morons, or anything of that nature; for it would be an understatement in my opinion.

I strongly believe that it could be wise for the opponents of the SPLM/A to criticize the SPLM/A on the basis of issues regarding its ideology like the unity of Sudan and other crucial issues such as the recent census and so forth. It does not make any genuine sense to pronounce SPLM/A as a dinka party and army. The realities to justify that the SPLM/SPLA was and is still not a single tribal (dinka) party and army are paramount indeed. For instance, during the early formation of the SPLM/SPLA as a political and military movement, many non dinka individuals were included in its rank and file. The movement's hierachy ranged from Dr John Garang, Kerubino Kuanyin Bol, William Nyuon Bany, Arok Thon Arok, John Kulang Puot, Nyachogak Nyacholuk, Yousif Kowa Makki and Martin Manyiel Ayuel. William Nyuon Bany, Arok Thon Arok, John Kulang Puot, Nyachogak Nyacholuk, Yousif Kowa Makki were not from the dinka tribe. They haile from various tribes of south Sudan with Yousif Kowa being from the Nuba region. Some people argue and continuously advocate that the division that ultimately led to serious confrontation between SPLM/A and Anya Nya two was based on Nuer-dinka division which is not true at all. The fact is that those who equal the SPLM/A Anya Nya two differeces with tribal division mainly between Nuer and Dinka could be classify as either lacking political realities or simply ignore the matter of the fact. The division bewteen SPLM/A and Anya Nya two was literally based on differences on political ideologies rather than tribal dissimilarities.
For most of you who know the politics of southern liberation, the southern war against the central successive clique regimes in Khartoum was and is currently divided between the unionists one side and the separatists on the other side of the coin. On this basis, the Anya Nya forces of Akuot Atem, Gai Tut and Abdullah Choul fits the second group of separatists. Also important is to reject other people's claims that Dr. Riak Machar is the father of the South Sudan's Self-determination. There were separatists since 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and in the 80s. Dr. Riak was not there by then. For various reasons, the SPLM/A as we all know for has been and is still calling for the unity of the country on the new basis strategically. Only those who don not read bewteen the lines have failed to realized the politics of the SPLM/A. Many People term the SPLM position as a strategic move because of how the movement had formulated its policies, objectives and vision. Those who had an opportunity to listen to most of late Dr. Garang video addresses might agree with me.

There is also no doubt for one to totally disagree with those who call SPML/A dinka party and army even in the contemporary twenty first century. The SPLM/A dominated southern government in Juba is composed of most southern tribes. To justify this fact one would again name people such as Wani Igga, Pagan Amum, Oyai Deng Ajak, Riak Machar, John Luk, James Hoth and other countless individuals holding significant posts inside the south, in north Sudan, and around the world as deplomates. Some concern south Sudnanese are deeply concern when certain destructive group who claim that SPLM/A is a dinka movement and army with all these glaring facts in place. It is important for this particular group to believe that SPLM/A is founded and controlled by most southern tribes contrary to what they might be thinking. It is also crucial for those who believe that Riak Machar is the father of south Sudan Self-determination when he is in fact not the one. Nobody resent Riak Machar to have such title. The truth is that history need to be presented accurately and accordingly. Some of you might recall that there was Southern Front of which Abel Alier was a member. This was during the period of William Deng Nhial. This does not mean that Abel is the father of Self-determination. If there is one person who deserve to be called the father of South Sudan's Self-determination, then former chief Lolik Lado is the one. He position during the 1947 Juba conference was clear to the British, Northern and Southern Sudanes. For further reference go and read Abel's Too Many Agreements Dishonored.
