Over 121,400 South Sudanese refugees have crossed into Sudan by the end of February, said United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
“By Feb. 19, an estimated 121,400 South Sudanese refugees have arrived in Sudan following the outbreak of violence in South Sudan in mid-December 2013,” said OCHA in a report made available Monday.
Humanitarian assistance and food have been provided for the refugees from South Sudan at the border of Sudanese areas and states, the report said, adding that the necessary funding is still not enough.
South Sudan plunged into violence in December 2013, when fighting erupted between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and defectors led by his former deputy Riek Machar.
The conflict soon turned into an all-out war, with the violence taking on an ethnic dimension that pitted the president’s Dinka tribe against Machar’s Nuer ethnic group.
The clashes have left thousands of South Sudanese dead and forced around 1.9 million people to flee homes.
